The 8 day Rongai Route Kilimanjaro climb offers an unforgettable journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro from the mountain’s northeastern side. This route is known for its scenic landscapes, quieter trails and gradual approach to the summit.
Starting near the Tanzanian-Kenyan border, the trek takes you through rainforest, moorland, the lunar-like alpine desert and the high-altitude slopes of Kibo. You will spend a night at Mawenzi Tarn, cross the Saddle to Kibo Hut and then make your final ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet).
After reaching the summit, you descend through the Marangu side of the mountain before returning to Moshi.

Your 8 day Mount Kilimanjaro adventure begins with your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport.
A Serengeti Experience representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi.
After checking in, you will have time to relax and prepare for your trek.
Later, meet your professional mountain guide for a pre-climb briefing. Your guide will explain the trekking schedule, mountain safety, altitude management and what to expect throughout the climb.
At Rongai Gate, your guide will complete the registration procedures while the mountain crew prepares the equipment.
Begin your trek along the Rongai Route.
The trail initially passes through lush rainforest, where you can enjoy the cool surroundings and listen to the sounds of birds and other wildlife.
This first trekking day is relatively short, allowing you to gradually adjust to the mountain environment.
After approximately 3 to 4 hours of hiking, arrive at Simba Camp.

The trail gradually leaves the rainforest behind as you enter the moorland zone.
The vegetation becomes shorter and more open, with giant heathers and high-altitude plants creating a distinctive Kilimanjaro landscape.
As you gain elevation, the views become wider and more dramatic.
Your guide will maintain a comfortable pace and encourage you to follow the important Kilimanjaro trekking principle of walking slowly to help your body adjust to the altitude.
After several hours, arrive at Kikelewa Camp, where you will enjoy your evening surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery.
The trail crosses an increasingly dry and rugged landscape that resembles a lunar desert.
As you climb higher, the vegetation becomes increasingly sparse and the imposing slopes of Mawenzi Peak dominate the landscape.
Mawenzi is one of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones and provides a dramatic backdrop for today’s trek.
Eventually, reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp, situated near a beautiful mountain tarn beneath Mawenzi Peak.

Today’s trail crosses the famous Saddle, the broad high-altitude area between Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak.
The landscape is almost completely barren, with little vegetation surviving at this elevation.
The trail may feel challenging because of the altitude, so your guide will maintain a slow and steady pace.
After several hours, arrive at Kibo Hut, located at approximately 4,700 meters.
After dinner, your guide will provide a final summit briefing.
You will then go to bed early because the summit attempt begins around midnight.
Wake around midnight and begin your summit attempt under the stars.
Continue towards the summit and eventually reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet).
Standing at Uhuru Peak is the highlight of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
Take time to celebrate, take photographs and, weather permitting, enjoy spectacular sunrise views across the African landscape.
After spending time at the summit, begin your descent.
Continue down towards Kibo Hut before proceeding to Horombo Hut, where you will spend the night.

The trail passes through the moorland before gradually entering the lush rainforest.
The dramatic change in vegetation provides a wonderful contrast to the dry alpine landscape you experienced near the summit.
Continue down towards Marangu Gate, where you will officially complete your Kilimanjaro trek.
At the gate, you will sign out of the park and receive your summit certificate if you successfully reached the designated summit point.
Your vehicle will then transfer you back to Moshi.
Enjoy your final breakfast at your hotel in Moshi.
Depending on your flight schedule, you may have some free time to relax, explore Moshi or purchase souvenirs.
At the appropriate time, your Serengeti Experience representative will transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home or onward journey.
Your 8 day Rongai Route Kilimanjaro climb comes to an end with unforgettable memories of the mountain and your achievement of reaching Uhuru Peak.
