The 8 day Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro climb is an adventurous trekking itinerary designed for experienced and physically prepared hikers looking for a more challenging approach to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The Umbwe Route is known for its steep initial ascent, beautiful rainforest scenery and dramatic mountain landscapes. After reaching Umbwe Camp, the route joins the Southern Circuit, passing through Barranco, Karanga and Barafu before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet).
The additional acclimatization time on this itinerary allows trekkers to gradually gain altitude before attempting the summit.
Your journey begins in Moshi with a pre-climb briefing and gear check before you enter Kilimanjaro National Park. Over the following days, you will trek through different ecological zones, from tropical rainforest to alpine desert and finally the high-altitude summit zone.

Your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure begins with your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport.
A representative from Serengeti Experience will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi.
Moshi is the main gateway for many Mount Kilimanjaro trekking routes and provides a convenient starting point for your climb.
Your trekking equipment will also be checked to ensure you have the necessary gear for the mountain.
The Umbwe Route is famous for its steep and direct approach to Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail passes through dense vegetation, with towering trees, vines and moss creating a beautiful natural environment.
The first day is physically demanding, so maintaining a steady pace is important. Your guide will encourage you to walk slowly and conserve your energy for the higher elevations ahead.
After several hours of trekking, arrive at Umbwe Camp, where your mountain crew will have prepared your accommodation and meals.

Today’s trail becomes steeper as you leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone.
The vegetation begins to change as you gain altitude, with giant heathers and mountain plants replacing the dense rainforest.
The trail eventually connects with the Southern Circuit before continuing towards Barranco Camp.
Arrive at Barranco Camp in the afternoon and settle into camp.
Depending on weather and visibility, you may enjoy magnificent views of Kibo Peak, the highest summit of Kilimanjaro.
Although the wall looks intimidating from the camp, it is a non-technical climb that involves careful scrambling and using your hands for balance in some sections.
Your experienced mountain guide will lead you safely up the wall, choosing the best route and helping you negotiate the steeper sections.
Once above the Barranco Wall, continue through the spectacular alpine landscape towards Karanga Camp.
Arrive at Karanga Camp and enjoy lunch before relaxing and taking in the surrounding mountain views.

The trail climbs steadily through the alpine desert zone, where vegetation becomes increasingly sparse.
Eventually, you reach Barafu Camp, the main base camp for your summit attempt.
Your guides will provide a briefing about the summit climb, including the expected schedule, safety procedures and what to carry during the ascent.
After an early dinner, get as much rest as possible because your summit attempt will begin during the night.
You will wake around midnight and begin your summit attempt under the stars.
After reaching Stella Point, continue along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters.
Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, take time to celebrate your achievement and enjoy the breathtaking views from the summit.
Weather permitting, you may witness an unforgettable sunrise over the surrounding African landscape.
After taking photographs at the summit, begin your descent.

The trail descends through the beautiful rainforest, providing a welcome change after several days in the high-altitude environment.
As you descend, the vegetation becomes increasingly dense and the air warmer.
Continue towards Mweka Gate, where you will officially complete your Kilimanjaro climb.
At the gate, you will complete the necessary exit procedures and receive your summit certificate if you successfully reached the designated summit point.
Your vehicle will then transfer you back to Moshi.
Enjoy your final breakfast in Moshi.
Depending on your flight schedule, you may have some free time to relax, explore Moshi or purchase souvenirs before your departure.
At the appropriate time, your Serengeti Experience representative will transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your flight home or onward journey.
Your 8 day Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro climb comes to an end, leaving you with unforgettable memories of standing on the Roof of Africa.
