The 9 day Machame Route Kilimanjaro climb is an unforgettable trekking adventure through some of the most spectacular landscapes on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is one of Tanzania’s most popular Kilimanjaro routes because of its beautiful scenery and varied landscapes. The trail passes through rainforest, heathland, moorland, the Shira Plateau and high-altitude alpine desert before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet).
This 9 day itinerary provides a gradual ascent with several opportunities to gain altitude during the day and sleep at a lower elevation, helping with acclimatization.

Your 9 day Machame Route Kilimanjaro adventure begins when you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport.
A Serengeti Experience representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi.
After check-in, you can relax and prepare for your upcoming trek.
Later, meet your professional mountain guide for a pre-climb briefing. Your guide will explain the trekking schedule, safety procedures, altitude acclimatization and what to expect during the climb.
Once your trekking team is ready, begin your hike into the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest.
The trail winds through dense vegetation, with tall trees, moss-covered branches and a variety of plants and birds creating a beautiful natural environment.
The first day involves a significant elevation gain, so your guide will maintain a steady and comfortable pace.
After approximately 5 to 7 hours of trekking, arrive at Machame Camp, where your mountain crew will have prepared your accommodation and meals.

The trail becomes steeper as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the heathland and moorland zones.
The vegetation becomes shorter and the landscape opens up, providing impressive views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
After approximately 4 to 6 hours, reach Shira Camp, located at around 3,840 meters.
If weather conditions are favorable, you may enjoy views of Kibo rising above the surrounding landscape.
The route is designed to provide valuable acclimatization by allowing you to reach a higher elevation during the day before descending to sleep at a lower altitude.
The landscape becomes increasingly rugged as you approach the high-altitude zone.
After crossing the plateau, continue towards the dramatic Barranco Valley.
The giant Barranco Wall rises above the camp, creating one of the most impressive sights on this section of the Machame Route.
After approximately 5–7 hours of trekking, arrive at Barranco Camp.

The trail begins with a steep climb up the wall. Although it looks challenging from below, the route is manageable with the assistance of your experienced guide.
Once above the Barranco Wall, continue along the mountain ridge while enjoying spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and volcanic formations.
The trail then descends into Karanga Valley before climbing again towards Karanga Camp.
This relatively short trekking day allows you to reach camp in the afternoon, giving you valuable time to rest and prepare for the next stage.
The landscape is increasingly barren as you enter the high alpine desert.
The trail climbs steadily towards Barafu, situated at approximately 4,600 meters.
Upon arrival, your guide will brief you about the summit attempt and help you prepare your equipment.
Because the summit climb begins around midnight, an early dinner and early rest are essential.

You will wake around midnight and begin the summit attempt under the stars.
The trail climbs steadily through the darkness towards Stella Point, located on the crater rim.
At 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa.
Celebrate your achievement, take photographs and enjoy the incredible views, weather permitting.
After a short rest, continue descending towards Mweka Camp.
The trail becomes increasingly green and lush as you lose altitude.
After approximately 3–4 hours, arrive at Mweka Gate, where you will complete the park exit procedures.
Trekkers who successfully reach Uhuru Peak will receive their Kilimanjaro summit certificates.
Meet your vehicle and transfer back to Moshi.

Enjoy your final breakfast in Moshi.
Depending on your flight schedule, you may have free time to relax, explore Moshi or purchase souvenirs.
At the appropriate time, your driver will transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home or onward journey.
